Star Trek Beyond (2016)

I’m sorry it’s been like 12 years since I updated. I’m just incredibly terrible at not procrastinating. Even when it’s things I enjoy I’m a horrible procrastinator. I’m pretty sure I’d procrastinate eating if hunger pains didn’t exist, and I love to eat.

So, I’m going to go ahead and let you guys know (as a reminder) that I may be super biased. I LOVE space. I love SPACE! I LOVE SPACE! Anything to do with space automatically is twice as interesting no matter what.

Star Trek Beyond is the 3rd in the Star Trek reboot film series, and honestly, I loved it! If you’re someone who lives under a rock, Star Trek is about the crew of the Enterprise, a space exploration ship, exploring the unknown and going where no man has gone before, led by their fearless Captain Jim Kirk(Chris Pine)! The crew, namely Spock (Zachary Quinto), Bones (Karl Urban), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), Scotty (Simon Pegg), Sulu (John Cho), and Chekov (Anton Yelchin, RIP homie), always have incredibly adventures and challenges to overcome and still manage to save the day doing so! In this film, the crew of the Enterprise have been in deep space exploration for several years and, upon docking at a space station that’s SERIOUSLY TRIPPY AS HELL (like what is gravity in a false gravity situation, omg), they are there just in time for trouble to fall into their laps in the form of a lady claiming that, beyond a space storm, her ship crashed and her people had been captured by a Very Bad Man. Of course, being the crew of the Enterprise, they fly off to save the day and all hell breaks loose!

As far as Star Trek movies goes, this was a good third movie. The first was a solid establishing film for all the characters, the second was SUPER SERIOUS (I still remember that as the first and only time I’ve ever been in a movie theatre full of people sniffling and trying not to cry lol), and the third was just fun. Like, things were still Very Not Good(tm) but it was a fun movie. The story was enjoyable, we got to see how the characters had all progress, we got to meet the coolest character ever, Jaylah (Sofia Boutella)!

Seriously guys, Jaylah was so amazing. She’s been alone since she was a child and is super brave but still shows this childish side (she’s very young). She calls the space ship her house!!! GUYS SHE IS SO CUTE! Ah I love her. She’s amazing. Jaylah is the best ever. The only bigger badass is Sulu, but Sulu is ALWAYS the biggest badass (and here’s no different, no spoilers, but DUDE HAS STEEL COJONES!!!(side note, did you guys see that olympic diver whose parents NAMED HIM Steele Johnson??? AHAHAHAHAH!)).

And who doesn’t want to save the day with The Beastie Boys? Let’s just be real here!

Plus, casually gay Sulu is the shit, man! YAY DIVERSITY! Also, if you aren’t in the queer community, you may not realize how big a deal it is for a gay Asian dude to have a gay Asian husband. That’s monumental for our racist ass community. Us queers have serious problems with racism and prejudice.

Also, it cannot go without saying that Idris Elba did an AMAZING job as Krall. Now THAT was a fun bad guy. I can’t give too much without SPOILERING THE EFF OUT OF YOU GUYS but man. It was great. Sooo good. I really loved this one.

All I can say is that this summer had some really great movies and this was one of those GREAT movies. If you like Star Trek, or if you don’t KNOW if you like it and just know you like funny science fiction with heart, this is a movie for you.

My Rating: 8/10
