WHO YOU GONNA CALL?

These bitches! Yes, I will preface this whole thing with informing you at the very start that this is a positive review. If you want the short version of why I think I like it but some may not (besides the obvious) is that the original Ghostbusters movies were more of a solid story with some comedy thrown in. This movie was a less ‘oh wow!’ story and non-stop laughs.

I would say that this movie reminded me of the live action Scooby Doo movies as far as ‘decent story, but mostly enjoyable just for the tons of hilarious moments’. So if you like those movies, you’ll LOVE this one! If you don’t, then maybe this will be not your thing.

I loved this movie. I have seen some funny movies in theatres this year and this one is one of the funniest. I love to laugh. I’m the type of person that often finds herself to be the only one to laugh out loud at something somebody says. So to me, a real, solid comedy is right up my alley.

In case you live under a rock, Ghostbusters is a reboot of the highly beloved Ghostbusters movies of the 80s… but with 4 women instead of 4 men. Which, as you can imagine, really pissed off the type of person who uses the words “Feminazi” and “Liberal Media” in actual life. This reboot follows the story of two old friends, Erin (Kristen Wiig) and Abby (Melissa McCarthy) who long ago dreamed of becoming paranormal investigators, only to drift apart when Erin became a scientist and Abby stuck with that dream. Now, they come back together because Abby published a book she and Erin wrote together and it drags them back into the paranormal investigation world. Alongside Abby’s co-worker, Holtzman (Kate McKinnon) and a client-turned-partner, Patty (Leslie Jones), they uncover a plot to destroy the world with ghosts.

From the moment we met Erin, I admit, I was sort of like, ‘wow, this chick is sorta boring’, but then once she teamed up with Abby once more, she instantly became likeable. I’ve always had a non-opinion of Kristen Wiig. She’s not the funniest person ever but she’s not un-funny. I neither like nor dislike her. But, in this movie, I really did like her. I’ve always loved Melissa McCarthy from the days of Gilmore Girls and I have to say, the only one of her recent movies that was as funny as this one was Spy and I loved that one. She’s HILARIOUS in this movie. Patty was the funniest character, filling the non-scientist role wonderfully. Leslie Jones since this movie came out got tons of racist bullshit said to her that obviously pissed me off, but after seeing the movie, I’m even more upset they could shit on her performance. It was freaking hilarious.

But the standout, as I’m sure you’ve heard everybody say, is Holtzman! Kate McKinnon is not someone I’m familiar with at all, but oh my GOD this character! Holtzman is not the token ‘quirky one’ like you see in most movies with women, she’s just the flat out crazy one. She’s like the guy that blows shit up and laughs at the fireball in action movies. In fact, there’s one point in this film where she’s dancing with lit blowtorches around highly combustible materials like it’s no big deal. Everybody loves the crazy one of any movie, but she’s particularly likeable. And without too many spoilers, I cannot go without mentioning that action scene she has where she just kicks ghost ass and stands amongst the carnage!

It doesn’t matter who you are, you’re lying if you say that didn’t turn you on just a little bit, haha.

Oh and you can’t talk about funny without talking about Chris Hemsworth as Kevin. Oh Kevin. So pretty. But so simple. I loved Kevin. How dumb he was was so funny, but not in a mean way. Like, they were all like ‘oh bless him’ when he was stupid not like ‘oh God he’s too stupid to live’.  He was just so cute! I loved it! Also gotta hand it to Chris Hemsworth, I can’t say it without spoilers, but he actually did a pretty good job acting at the end. Kevin’s just such a lovely, sweet little dude. (Well maybe not so little, he is played by Thor, lol)

All in all, I loved this movie. It was so good. I instantly wanted to go see it again, but I’m not made of money so that’s not happening. No, it isn’t the most sophisticated plot, but you don’t go see this movie for an amazing plot, you go see it for the barrel of laughs. And that’s one thing it DOES NOT fail at. I’ll be quoting line from this movie for weeks to come!
